Minimum Requirements

  • A High School diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Possess a valid Commercial driver's license, class A without automatic restriction.
  • Maintain a current DOT physical (valid for at least one year.)
  • Willingness to work irregular hours, including nights and weekends.
  • Five (5) years of experience operating a Class A Combination Vehicle.

Preferred Requirements

  • Associate degree from a regionally accredited college.
  • Experience in teaching and/or counseling at a post-secondary level preferred.

Primary Functions of Position

The Truck Driver Training Instructor provides accessible, high-quality learning experience in classroom, laboratory, and/or distance learning settings. The instructor facilitates learning to help students succeed; provides accurate academic and career advisement; and seeks professional development opportunities to implement best practices in teaching.

This position teaches proper driving procedures, safe driver responsibilities, commercial motor vehicle laws and regulations, and the fundamental principles of operating commercial vehicles. Instruction includes classroom lectures, highway driving, and training range exercises to develop studentsโ€™ knowledge and skills in vehicle operation, safety, maintenance, defensive driving, freight handling, and related topics.

Essential Duties:

Program Management

  • Plan and facilitate accessible, quality instruction that enhances student learning and ensures studentsโ€™ understanding of course outcomes.ย 
  • Participate in and support ongoing assessment, planning and evaluation to improve student learning.
  • Maintain knowledgeable with program requirements to deliver accurate, quality academic and career advising to students.
  • Collaborate with program directors to update existing curriculum and develop new courses that remain current and relevant.
  • Contribute to the development, assessment, and review of course and program outcomes.
  • Maintain a lab area that is safe and clean.
  • Develop laboratory assignments to provide hands-on experience as appropriate.
  • Ensure availability for all students, in the classroom and through distance learning, by maintaining established office hours, offering availability by appointment, and by responding to electronic communication in an appropriate, timely manner. ย 
  • Mentorย part-time instructors toย ensure quality instruction.
  • Actively support the collegeโ€™s initiatives of retention, progression, and completion to ensure student success.
  • Adhere to the mission, vision, and values of the college by following all policies, procedures, and guidelines.ย 
  • Serve on various committees as assigned.
  • Assist with updates to the college catalog, web pages, and handbooks related to the program.
  • Maintain accurate program/student records, including regulatory/accreditation documentation.
  • Use a proactive Appreciative Advising model to support studentsโ€™ academic and career decisions.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Skills and Abilities
  • Excellent communication skills (listening, speaking, and writing).
  • Ability to interact effectively with diverse populations and maintain confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of the mission and purpose of the NC Community College System.
  • The position may require occasional lifting or carrying of instructional materials and equipment up to 20 pounds.
  • Ability to stand outdoors for extended periods (up to 9 hours daily) on asphalt or concrete in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to sit for long periods (up to 9 hours daily) while riding in a tractor-trailer.
  • Agility and quick reflexes to observe student driving situations and take control in emergencies when necessary.
Instructional and Interpersonal Skills
  • Strong communication and coaching skills to provide clear, constructive feedback to students.
  • Patience and professionalism when instructing students of diverse backgrounds and experience levels.
  • Ability to maintain composure and prioritize safety in high-pressure or emergency driving situations.
  • Organizational skills to manage student records, schedules, and program documentation accurately.
